Technology and the Passive Handshake

Technology is awesome. I love it. But what kind of effect has it already had on young people who grow up with it the same way those in my generation grew up with hotwheels and using our creativity and imagination outside on the playground? Has it produced a group of young men and women who don’t know how to socialize and lack basic communication skills?

The classic example, if you want to call it “classic”, is the young teenager at a party or gathering sitting in the corner with his head buried into his Nintendo DS or PSP, while tons of people are all around him. It’s the young man who, when addressed and greeted, lacks the confidence to look you in the eye, say hello, and give you a firm “manly” handshake. It’s the young teenager or even young adult who walks through a crowded mall with headphones on, in his/her own world. It’s the group or generation that now only knows how to communicate with their fingertips and not with their eyes, ears, and mouth.
